Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) massage is recommended by the surgeon after a cosmetic liposuction procedure. The specialized massage decreases recovery time, reduces chances of prominent scarring, and makes results more noticeable. The manual lymphatic drainage massage helps stimulate the flow of lymph fluid plus toxins and waste through the system and clean your system to improve plastic surgery recovery.
So, if you can’t make it to a hospital or spa that provides MLD for plastic surgery recovery or prefer in-home recovery, here’s how to do a self lymphatic drainage massage.
You can use your hands or an optional body tool for a DIY lymphatic drainage massage after liposuction or a tummy tuck. You’ll also need cream and body oil.
DIY lymphatic drainage massage
1. Press the area below your collar bones and gently move the fingers onto the neck.
2. Rub clockwise in the direction of your chest and drive the lymph toward the node for better flow.
3. Press and pull the skin under the armpit severally in the direction of the neck
4. Move over the arms with light pressure from the elbow to shoulders. Move your strokes in the direction of the lymph node or upward. Keep your stroke smooth but firm, and direct the flow around any scars.
5. For the stomach, press palms flat down onto the area between your hip bones. Overlap your hands and make circular movements around the navel button, then pinch the entire stomach area.
6. For the lower half, start at the groin or the inguinal nodes. Using a closed fist or tool, slide your hands from the knee upwards and massage the complete thigh area, including the inner knee. Be careful not to use excessive pressure to avoid flattening the nodes.
7. Massage the back of the knee and slide hands /tool from the back of the knee to the foot with pushing and scoping motions.
8. Clean up afterward.
Aftercare following a Lymphatic Drainage Massage is crucial. You should prioritize hydration and avoid certain items that may affect your in-home recovery.
